Opinion A Word, Please: How to navigate difficult subject-verb agreement problems Ukrainian became the official language of Ukraine in 1989 - about two years before the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic claimed its independence - and was reaffirmed as the country’s only official language in 1996 in the country’s constitution. But forced “Russification” resumed in the 1930s and more attempts to suppress Ukrainian ensued. After the Russian revolution of 1917, the Ukrainian language was afforded equal status in the region. In 1863, a secret order called “The Valuyev Circular” was issued by a minister of the Russian Empire to prohibit publications in the Ukrainian language. The Ukrainian language has come under repeated attack for centuries. Think of the small differences between the alphabets used in Spanish and Portuguese, or those of Arabic and Farsi, and you get the idea. Ukrainian uses a form of the Cyrillic alphabet, which is very similar to the alphabet used for Russian. Ukrainian falls under the East Slavic sub-branch of Indo-European languages, making it a close cousin of Polish, Serbian, Czech, Russian, Belorussian and Bulgarian. Like English, Ukrainian is an Indo-European language, which means it is structurally similar to our own tongue, as well as to German, Greek, Celtic, Italian, Hindi and about 440 others. Ukrainian is also common in some communities outside Ukraine, notably in Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, Lithuania and Slovakia. About 30% of Ukrainians speak Russian as their first language, while just under 3% speak Crimean Tatar, Moldovan, Hungarian, Romanian or any of the other three dozen languages spoken in Ukrainian homes. Ukrainian is the first language of about 68% of the country’s 44 million residents. With that in mind, here are a few facts about the language of Ukraine. And when those attacks are part of a worldwide assault on democracy itself, such an act of solidarity is simultaneously an act of American patriotism - a nod to the ideals of freedom and self-determination at home and abroad. When a peaceful country is fighting for its survival, when civilians are being bombed in their homes and children are getting killed, learning a little about its language can be a small gesture of solidarity. It offers a way to form bonds with people from other lands. This column is about language, not foreign affairs.īut language is culture. ![]()

12/31/2023 0 Comments Seen vs saw aave![]() ![]() ![]() First, if someone misinterprets speech and then carves that misinterpretation into the stone of the judicial record, it might be nigh impossible to uncover that a mistake happened at all. They are dangerous because cases big and small are won and lost on the minutiae of language, and they are insidious for two reasons. These errors are both dangerous and insidious. Misinterpretation can happen during live trial testimony or even before the police have begun an interrogation. Instead, these mistakes happen when a native English speaker, indeed someone who might not speak any other language whatsoever, has difficulty being understood, which affects a litigant’s case. The linguistic mistakes here are not the relatively predictable ones that arise from bad or no interpreters for a non-native English speaker. And Part IV tours English legal history and documents the expansion of dialectal diversity to show how principles of linguistic fairness run deep. Part III argues that the Constitution has an open door for dialectal due process claims. Part II demonstrates that the legal system should think of these mistakes as procedural in nature with judicially administrable remedies. 7 Here, the focus is on language qua language, which, while correlated with race, needn’t be inextricably tied to it. Furthermore, while it is probably true that racial minorities disproportionately bear the brunt of interpretive mistakes, any equal protection implications are for a different Note. The point is general, but the readily available evidence is not. Black English is a widespread dialect and one whose population of speakers is disproportionately represented in criminal adjudication, where colloquial testimony often features prominently. This is because of the insidiousness of the errors. One may wonder at the choice to use examples from only Black English when the point applies to any dialect. Part I showcases a few prominent English-to-English errors the legal system has made before, using Black English as the lens. Past scholarship on dialect has brought invaluable attention to the subject, and this Note seeks to continue that burgeoning tradition by showing how the status quo raises constitutional concerns and by serving as a resource and model for dialectal analysis going forward. Intuitively, something’s amiss when the legal system, seemingly arbitrarily, messes up when interpreting some forms of English and not others. ![]() A mouthful to be sure, but the argument is that it is a violation of procedural due process to maintain procedures that will reliably cause misinterpretation of plain English and make it harder for litigants, especially criminal defendants, to win their cases. More precisely, the Due Process Clauses of the Constitution demand that the executive and judicial branches maintain procedures to avoid inaccurate transmission of linguistic data that adversely affects litigants. Here, the goal is not to prove errors happen but to see whether the Constitution cares errors happen. soil, but state and federal law have no coherent dialectal jurisprudence. Much work has reckoned with the contours of due process when people come to court with little to no English proficiency, 3 but what about dialectal misinterpretation? 4 English has numerous dialects, many birthed on what is now U.S. legal systems, 2 but some forms of “English” are more equal than others. It happens to be the de facto and sometimes de jure language of the U.S. If you’re reading this, you probably understand English. Improving our understanding of glacial hydrology and its effect on glacier dynamics requires new methods. Specifically, the mechanisms driving water routing from the glacier surface to the bed remain largely unexplored. Despite these findings, major knowledge gaps remain, especially within subglacial hydrology due to limited observations of the environment. Vice versa, the velocity controls the incision rates in ice-walled channels in conjunction with water temperature and the rate of heat loss at channel boundaries ( Lock, 1990 Isenko et al., 2005 Jarosch and Gudmundsson, 2012). The channel geometry influences flow resistance and water velocity ( Germain and Moorman, 2016). These geometric adjustments often form step-pool sequences (e.g., Vatne and Irvine-Fynn, 2016) and are responsible for up to 90 % of the total flow resistance ( Curran and Wohl, 2003). The capacity of the glacial drainage system varies in both space and time and dynamically adjusts to the highly variable meltwater supply ( Schoof, 2010 Bartholomew et al., 2012). Ice-walled drainage systems have highly variable geometry, controlled by the counteracting mechanisms of melt enlargement due to dissipation of potential energy and creep closure of the viscous ice ( Röthlisberger, 1972). Water enters the englacial and subglacial drainage system through moulins, crevasses and cut-and-closure systems ( Gulley et al., 2009). ![]() Surface water is generally routed supraglacially, i.e., along the glacier surface in ice-walled drainage systems. Glacial hydrology plays a key role in glacier dynamics ( Flowers, 2018), sediment transport and its impact on fjord and proglacial ecosystems (e.g., Swift et al., 2005 Meire et al., 2017 Urbanski et al., 2017). Future deployments of drifters into englacial and subglacial channels promise new opportunities for determining hydraulic and morphologic conditions from repeated measurements of such inaccessible environments. Our results show that multimodal drifters can be a useful tool for field measurements inside supraglacial channels. Furthermore, our results indicate that prominent shapes in the sensor records are likely to be linked to variations in channel morphology and the associated flow field. Linear acceleration measurements were found to have a substantially higher variability of ☓4.4 % of the time-averaged mean magnitude, and the calculated speeds remained within ☒4.5 % of the time-averaged mean along the flow path. Magnetometer readings also exhibited low variability across deployments, maintaining readings within ☒.45 % of the time-averaged mean of the magnetometer magnitudes. The experiments ( n=55) in the supraglacial channel show that the pressure sensors consistently yielded the most accurate data, where values remained within ☐.11 % of the total pressure time-averaged mean (95 % confidence interval). To address this, we conducted repeated field experiments in a 450 m long supraglacial channel with small cylindrical drifters equipped with pressure, magnetometer, acceleration and rotation rate sensors and compared the results. Before drifters can be used as general tools in glacial studies, it is necessary to quantify the variability of their measurements. However, practical experience with drifters in glacial hydrology remains limited. Recently, sensing drifters have shown promise in river, coastal and oceanographic studies. Due to challenging field conditions, the processes driving surface processes in glacial hydrology remain sparsely studied. ![]() Surface meltwater drains through glaciers via supraglacial, englacial and subglacial systems. ![]() Glacial hydrology plays an important role in the control of glacier dynamics, of sediment transport, and of fjord and proglacial ecosystems. ![]() 12/31/2023 0 Comments Project prioritization template excel![]() When you’re contemplating what prioritization method to use for your project, you need to identify the key factors which are important to your particular project for example, effort, impact, costs, risks and so on. While the general principles are the same for each type of problem, the approach will vary due to the fact the problems differ in terms of their initial conditions. There are two basic types of projectile problems that we will discuss in this course. In a typical physics class, the predictive ability of the principles and formulas are most often demonstrated in word story problems known as projectile problems. Combining the two allows one to make predictions concerning the motion of a projectile. The mathematical formulas that are used are commonly referred to as kinematic equations. The physical principles that must be applied are those discussed previously in Lesson 2. In the case of projectiles, a student of physics can use information about the initial velocity and position of a projectile to predict such things as how much time the projectile is in the air and how far the projectile will go. Such predictions are made through the application of physical principles and mathematical formulas to a given set of initial conditions. ![]() © Texas Education Agency (TEA).One of the powers of physics is its ability to use physics principles to make predictions about the final outcome of a moving object. To do this, we separate projectile motion into the two components of its motion, one along the horizontal axis and the other along the vertical. Since vertical and horizontal motions are independent, we can analyze them separately, along perpendicular axes. Keep in mind that if the cannon launched the ball with any vertical component to the velocity, the vertical displacements would not line up perfectly. You can see that the cannonball in free fall falls at the same rate as the cannonball in projectile motion. Figure 5.27 compares a cannonball in free fall (in blue) to a cannonball launched horizontally in projectile motion (in red). The most important concept in projectile motion is that when air resistance is ignored, horizontal and vertical motions are independent, meaning that they don’t influence one another. Ask students to guess what the motion of a projectile might depend on? Is the initial velocity important? Is the angle important? How will these things affect its height and the distance it covers?
